Music Engraving in the 21st Century
Developments and Perspectives

Computers are everywhere today. Even in the music world, computers have become a tool used for many purposes; especially for music engraving, they are now indispensable. The old craft of music engravers has become extinct, and we now rely on programs to apply the knowledge and aesthetics accumulated over centuries. This brings opportunities and challenges that have to be considered as we head towards the future of musical applications in the digital age.

The keynote speaker was Elaine Gould, author of “the” authoritative book on music engraving, Behind Bars, discussing the value of high-quality music engraving..

The various talks that followed tried to highlight these aspects from different perspectives within two days of the conference. We were also happy to be able to offer workshops and presentations of music notation software. In particular, we enjoyed the presentation of the new music notation flagship Dorico 3 by Steinberg Media Technologies, the company which generously supported the conference with software licenses for the university's MediaLab.
